The G&G Stitch Academy Kids Summer Holiday Workshops 2025
Do you have a crafty child or teenager who is inspired by the Sewing Bee? Do they want to learn how to use a sewing machine or hand sewing techniques but don't know where to start? Do you want to find something fun and imaginative to keep them occupied during the School Summer Holidays?
In these 3 hour sewing sessions, students will learn how to use a range of materials and sewing tools, including the sewing machine. They will then put their new skills into practice as they make their very own project to take home.
Projects include stylish summer pouches, practical cross body bags, cuddly owl cushions, customisable zipped coin pouches, fabulous felt pin badges and timeless patchwork cushion covers.
The sessions are suitable for complete beginners and for those children who are familiar with the sewing machine. The project details can be made more challenging for those children who already attend the G&G stitch academy during term time or who can already use a sewing machine.
Classes are suitable for children aged 7 and above.
There are several sewing sessions scheduled throughout the school holidays (see below for dates and projects).

Cross body bag
Friday 25th July

A stylish and practical cross body bag perfect for taking your essentials on holidays or day trips! Choose from a selection of fun fabrics to suit all tastes. The bag is fully lined, has a sturdy cotton webbing strap and fastens with a popper.
Scrunchies and hairbands
Monday 28th July

Add a pop of colour and fun to any outfit—scrunchies are the perfect summer accessory! Kids love making and wearing their own creations—stylish, soft, and totally unique!
Accessory Pouch
Thursday 7th August
10:00am - 1:00pm
A gorgeous summer pouch that can be used for sunglasses, as a pencil case or clutch purse! The pouch is fully lined and fastens with a popper. Choose from a selection of fun jacquard fabrics to suit all tastes.
Applique notebook covers
Friday 15th August
10:00am - 1:00pm
These fantastic covers can be used to cover notebooks for themselves or make them as gifts for people. They are a great way to personalise stationery and make them truly unique!
Fun cushions
Monday 18th August
1.30pm-4.30pm
Children can design their very own cushion to take home. Whether they want to make a character cushion like Steve from Minecraft, or get crafty with ribbons, embellishments, and bold colours, this is the perfect chance for young makers to get stitching and express their unique style.
Mini bunting
Thursday 28th August
10:00am-1:00pm
Whether it's for their bedroom, parties or as gifts, children can choose from a selection of fabrics and trims to make a string of flags that is unique to them!

Further Information
- Skills learnt will depend on the class project but may include:
- How to use textiles tools and equipment (scissors, needles, pins, marking chalk etc)
- How to use a sewing machine safely
- How to sew a straight seam
- How to sew a curved seam
- How to clip seam allowances
- How to attach snap fasteners
- How to applique
- How to sew a variety of hand sewing techniques e.g. blanket stitch, running stitch, back stitch
- How to sew on buttons using the sewing machine
These classes are suitable for children and teenagers aged over 7 years old, who are either completely new to sewing or have more sewing experience. Projects can be adapted to suit all levels of abilities with more details added for those more experienced sewists.

- Use of the g&g templates for each project
- Use of the sewing machines and machine thread
If you or your child has their own basic sewing kit (e.g scissors, pins, tape measure, needles and marking chalk) then please bring along with you. If not, then don't worry, we can provide equipment for them to use during the session.
Alison Ivens
Alison has always been crafty and over the years has tried her hand at all sorts, including jewellery making, felting and paper crafts, but over the last few years she has found her passion in sewing and crochet.
After finishing a Fine Art Printmaking degree and Masters in Gallery Studies Alison spent 18 years working as Museum Manager and Curator in a small Lichfield museum, and while this was an important part of her past, she is now enjoying the opportunity to talk dressmaking with our lovely customers.
When she's not at the shop Alison is a mum to two children who, along with her husband, benefit from her dressmaking. Her wardrobe is very eclectic and her favourite pattern is animal print, which she considers a neutral!
Lorna Hulme
Lorna is forever grateful to her Mum for teaching her to sew as an adult. She fell in love with everything sewing! So much so that she couldn’t bear to keep these skills to herself. Being driven by her passion for inspiring other people to sew, Lorna spent 7 years sharing this love of sewing through teaching others in her own sewing workshop business.
Lorna joined the Guthrie & Ghani team in January 2024 as the Workshops and events coordinator. She is responsible for organising the programme of events and sewing workshops and will be joining the team of sewing tutors too.
Lorna loves all aspects of sewing but her particular passion is dressmaking.
When she’s not sewing she enjoys running, cycling, running around after 2 teenagers and drinking hot chocolate!
