g&g Stitch Academy Half Term Sewing Workshop - Fun cushions
Looking for a creative, hands-on activity for the May half term? Join us at g&g for a Kids’ Sewing Class where imagination and fabric come together to create something amazing!
In this fun-filled session, kids will learn how to use a sewing machine and design their very own cushion to take home. Whether they want to make a character cushion like Steve from Minecraft, or get crafty with ribbons, embellishments, and bold colours, this is the perfect chance for young makers to get stitching and express their unique style.
Tuesday 27th May 2025 - 10.00am-1:00pm
Thursday 29th May 2025 - 10.00am-1:00pm
Children will choose from a selection of coordinating fabrics and trims to make their project.
By the end of the session, they’ll walk away with their very own personalised cushion!
The session is ideal for complete beginners and also offers additional challenges for those who are more familiar with sewing, including those who already attend the G&G Stitch Academy. For those more confident with a sewing machine, the project can be tailored to include additional skills such as adding a pocket for a book on the reverse or inserting a zip.
This class is suitable for children ages 7 and up and designed to be fun and accessible to all skill levels.

- How to use textiles tools and equipment (scissors, needles, pins, marking chalk etc)
- How to use a sewing machine safely
- How to sew a straight seam
- How to sew a zig zag stitch
- How to turn corners
Optional extras if more confident/have existing sewing machine skills:
- How to sew a patch pocket
- How to insert a zip
- How to attach a sewing label
This class is suitable for children and teenagers aged over 7 years old, who are either completely new to sewing or have some sewing experience.
- All of the materials and components needed for the project including a cushion pad.
- Use of the g&g templates for each project
- Use of the sewing machines and machine thread
Approximate size of finished cushion 25cm x 25cm
If you or your child has their own basic sewing kit (e.g scissors, pins, tape measure, needles and marking chalk) then please bring along with you. If not, then don't worry, we can provide equipment for them to use during the session.
Lorna Hulme
Lorna is forever grateful to her Mum for teaching her to sew as an adult. She fell in love with everything sewing! So much so that she couldn’t bear to keep these skills to herself. Being driven by her passion for inspiring other people to sew, Lorna spent 7 years sharing this love of sewing through teaching others in her own sewing workshop business.
Lorna joined the Guthrie & Ghani team in January 2024 as the Workshops and events coordinator. She is responsible for organising the programme of events and sewing workshops and will be joining the team of sewing tutors too.
Lorna loves all aspects of sewing but her particular passion is dressmaking.
When she’s not sewing she enjoys running, cycling, running around after 2 teenagers and drinking hot chocolate!
