Complete Beginners sewing class

Are you interested in learning to sew but not sure if it's for you? Or would you like to give sewing a try without purchasing a machine? During this workshop you will learn the basics of setting up and using a sewing machine and you will sew up a gorgeous cushion cover!

There are 2 options available for this class:

A 1 day class (6 hours) or 2 evening sessions (2 x 3 hours)

1 day classes (9.30am-4pm):

Saturday 12th April 2025

Sunday 15th June 2025

Sunday 28th September 2025

2 x Evening classes (6pm-9pm):

Wednesday 21st May and Wednesday 4th June 2025

During the morning session (or first evening session) you will learn about the different parts of a sewing machine, along with how to thread it up, create a bobbin, select stitches and sew simple seams. There will be lots of opportunity to practise techniques to build confidence.

During the afternoon session (or second evening session) you will have the opportunity to choose from a selection of lovely, neutral fabric designs and sew up a simple cushion cover with envelope closure.

Please note: This is a class designed for adults. If you are interested in a child aged 12-15 attending please refer to our Policy for Under 16's Attending Adult Workshops here. Alternatively take a look at our children's classes here.

PLEASE NOTE - If the class is showing as fully booked, please contact us on info@guthrie-ghani.co.uk and we can check availability. Sometimes we can experience a glitch in the website where the workshop appears as fully booked when it is not. We are fixing it as soon as possible.

Claire Heath

Sewing has always been a huge part of Claire's life. As a child she was always making, crafting and fixing things. Her love of fabric and making drove her to study Textiles and Fashion Design at Leeds University. After graduating and gaining some invaluable experience in the fashion and textiles industry Claire realised her true passion was sharing her skills and knowledge of garment construction with others.

Claire has been teaching design as a qualified lecturer for well over a decade. She joined the g&g team shortly after the shop opened in 2013 as a workshop tutor. During her time with us she has taught countless workshops and has loved helping customers learn how to sew and create wearable garments that will become staples of their me-made wardrobe.
